Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight: So Dull, It’s Suspicious

I’ve finally finished Twilight after quite a while.
I have even watched the movie!
So I guess it’s safe for me to say my opinion.

I don’t like the book or the movie, but the movie was better.

I need to remind you that I had no prejudice whatsoever before reading it.

The book actually started promising. It was very light, in a way like those unreal, predictable, and yet entertaining stories.

However, after that, it was pretty much a drag.

I can’t believe that an idea like ‘I love you-but stay away from me-I’m dangerous’ can be stretched to well over 400 pages; and in a pretty much the same way.
Not to mention, the use of words like handsome, perfect, beautiful, Adonis, etc. to describe Edward Cullen (the protagonist vampire) that might have been just about 100 times too many.

SPOILER ALERT!!!
SPOILER ALERT!!!
SPOILER ALERT!!!

*************************** SPOILER STARTS ***************************

The last 100 pages were better. There was suddenly a threat to the protagonists; an evil vampire that wanted to suck Bella (the female protagonist)’s blood.
But again, I was disappointed by how it turned out.
Just when the final battle between the good and evil was about to happen, Bella collapsed and passed out.
And since the whole book was written by her perspective, I didn’t have the slightest clue about what had happened in the battle! All I got were a few short sentences by Edward afterward about what had transpired, while staying with Bella in the hospital.
It was so frustrating.

*************************** SPOILER ENDS ***************************

So, no, I don’t like it.

But then, I caught a bunch of reviews which stated that Stephenie Meyer was an expert in playing with her readers’ emotions.

So maybe that’s why I don’t like it, because simply, I don’t get it.
Maybe the book has very specific target readers.
I can only guess that for the people who do get it and have their emotions caught in the play, the best part of the book must be in the first 400-something pages.
And that would also explain why what I thought was the climax didn’t feel like a climax at all; because it was never intended to be one.

I don’t really know. I’m just guessing.
I will most likely not strangle anyone who likes it though.

  1. I haven't read the book, and maybe never will be seeing it's 500 pages of stupidity and high school puppy love..

but makes me wonder seeing the number of girls liking this book, do you really think they like the dangerous unreliable type of guy?

i mean in the real world, an edward cullen had to be unemployed because he only had his good looking, or became a photo model..?but aren't those kind of guy are not the "catch" for women?

in mya conclusion women nowadays only want to have fun but latter ditch the "edward cullen" for a rich and succesful "mini-me"..

    it's pathetic really.

  2. "high school puppy love"

Exactly....this book..no...the whole idea of the story is STUPID!!!

Mysterious guy will get no girlfriend..PERIOD!!!in reality, girls are attracted to "gaul" guy, humorist, or the one that could twist their curiosity by "tarik ulur" fucking game...so those girls who loves the idea of "mysterious handsome guy who says I am dangerous" is just delusional...just ask their relationship history..you'll find that the most mentions words are "wanita ingin di mengerti"...halah...

  3. hahahaha...

maybe just for the sex part.
    never for the serious relationship.

I've never met a woman who REALLY digs this mystery thingy also.
even if they did, mysteries don't last right, so how long would that kind of relationship last anyway?

    mm... come to think again.
maybe if someone's terribly handsome, he can pull this kind of thing.
no ugly guy will attract someone if he acts mysteriously.
he'll get reported to the police.

  4. sometimes I think they only care for how many houses or cars a guy has (financial security).
so they need this kind of book to fulfill their fantasies.

    not all of them.
    but still lots of them.

  8. fell asleep for about an hour during the movie, laughed a lot when awake...so I guess it's a good movie after all, y'knaw as long as you watch it on Monday's 'nomat'.
But I do believe there's at least one mysterious guy succeeded in both attracting and ditching women: Cassanova.
    He ain't that dangerous though.

  9. so basically it's

lure them with secret sexual relationships

    and

ditch them before they do because of finding out how bankrupt you actually are...

    hehehehe...

  11. Slightly off topic:
i just remember few months back a former classmate told me he joined on a course to attract women.
One of the key is being mysterious, he said.
After an hour talk on that 2 million rph course, I concluded that the course only giving out superficial tips and it ain't worth a penny.
It made my day though, finding out there were people so desperate they're willing to splash that much.

  12. have the same opinion like you hub...

I have read the book and watch the movie. The movie is far far better than the book. Read the book make me sleepy (and really sleep).

I wonder why the woman like it. It's really sucks.

Far and much better Harry Potter.
Btw, i swear I never read other Twilight book anymore.

  13. I don' really see the point of reading harry oter at first..but After I reread it myself, I have to admit that harry potter is indeed a good book...Rowling is a genius..it is way beyond the league of twilight..

zwaterman: Wow...2 jt??then I guess hub's brother will make a fortune with his future female luring guide book...hehe

  14. @virus
a friend of mine told me that best is the third book. but yeah, I most probably won't read it. I've got a lot of books in my hands right now.

    @zwaterman
yeah, I've heard about the courses. did you actually have one or just hear it from someone else?
they're supposed to have these girls on stage too, and participants can try to practice their skill.
lots of people need help to even start a relationship I suppose.

  15. @aron: hmm, then I should contact him and buy his copyrights :)

@hub: I heard it from our friend back in the days of MR 64 who took the course (who I think better than an average Joe). Apparently there are several groups selling the course, and I heard about it too, although the girls were confined to closed doors.
Just funny hearing how they teach you to make a move on chicks...The moves were taken mostly from Western movies & help book, so they don't really create something 'uniquely Indonesian'
and no, the tips were just for dating, not for relationships...a bid investment.
    better buy Ryo's book :0

  16. heh.. i sense a new career for him.. and according to the stories i hear from a trusted source *wink* (^_~) the title will be somekind of "how to treat women like trash and still get some" or "call me a D**k but hate me not" or "how to get woman in a ziffy"

    hahahaha

humph..since i'm an MD i'll suggest plastic surgery or psychiatry hipnotism therapy. living a lie, but a happy one. that's a good investment right? =P
